TE HONGI
"Sharing the breath of life."
The tradition of the hongi goes back to the Maori mythology of the creation of the first earthly woman, Hineahuone. She was moulded from clay by Tāne, the creator god who then breathed life into her nostrils, making her the first woman in Maori legends.
"A symbolic show of unity."
A hongi is a traditional Maori greeting from New Zealand used by Maori people. An exchange of "Hongi" is performed by
pressing the noses of two people together and touching their foreheads. Afterwards, a handshake may follow. The greeting is not reserved for cultural or formal meetings. It is in fact rather an informal way to greet that is used everyday especially for those who are connected to their Maori heritage.
